Game Changers: from Nurse to Software Engineer – Jéssica Balkestahl

At Fabamaq, we celebrate stories of transformation and resilience that redefine professional boundaries. In the first edition of our "Game Changers" series, we share the inspiring journey of Jéssica Balkestahl, a former nurse who embraced the world of technology at a software house in Porto.

From Nurse to Software Engineer

I'm Jéssica, 31 years old, and I decided to embark on a professional reconversion journey that brought me to Fabamaq, a software house in Porto, as a Software Engineer. Before this transition, I worked as a nurse for seven years, an experience that shaped me personally and professionally.

The decisive moment happened while I was working at a hospital in London and saw a job opening for a Software Engineer that combined programming with nursing experience. This announcement awakened me to the possibility of merging two areas that have always fascinated me. The idea of developing technological solutions capable of positively impacting thousands of people was the necessary encouragement to change careers.

The appeal of the tech industry

The potential for innovation and impact attracted me most to the tech field. I've always been fascinated by how technology can transform lives and solve complex problems. I wanted something more dynamic than nursing, where, despite being a rewarding job, I felt the need for new challenges. As a Software Engineer, monotony doesn't exist, there's always something new to learn and interesting problems to solve.

Challenges of professional reconversion

Naturally, this transition came with its share of concerns. The biggest was financial stability during the transition period. So, while still working as a nurse, I started exploring programming through free online courses. When I realized this was my passion, I enrolled in a degree in Computer Engineering. However, since I was studying part-time, I realized it would take about six years to complete the course. That's when I opted for an intensive six-month course, which gave me the practical foundations to enter the market.

During this time, balancing work, study, and personal life was one of the biggest challenges. I had to create a very disciplined routine: waking up earlier to study and dedicating myself to the course in the evening. Family support was essential, helping me with household chores and allowing me to focus on my goals.

Transferable skills: from nursing to technology

When transitioning to the tech field, I realized how much the skills from my nursing experience are still relevant. The skills acquired in an area like healthcare are highly valuable in an IT company. The ability to:

  • Handle high-pressure situations and make quick decisions;
  • Work in a team, aligning objectives and ensuring effective collaboration;
  • Maintain a continuous learning mindset, essential in a tech company.

My experience at Fabamaq

Joining Fabamaq, a casino gaming software house in Porto, was an exciting yet intimidating moment. Starting in such a different area brought a mix of enthusiasm and insecurity. However, I was warmly welcomed by the team, who were always willing to share knowledge and assist in my integration. This collaborative and innovative environment has been a constant source of motivation.

One of my greatest achievements so far was developing, on my own, a SAS emulator from scratch. This project was a milestone in my new career and confirmed that I made the right decision in making this change. Working in a tech company challenges me to grow and evolve every day.

For those considering a career change

If you're considering a transition to the tech field, my advice is simple: try it first! Take online courses to see if it's truly your passion. The change can be intimidating, but it's also extremely rewarding. Growth and comfort rarely coexist, but the end result is worth all the effort.
